We all know: chronic stress, time pressure and anger lead to encreasing aggression and sustainable excitement – then it’s simply “for crying out loud”. Some people turn literally red in the face and it “swells one’s crest”.
In case of accumulation a most unhealthy condition may have consequences, namely hypertension. The same applies to excessive nicotine consumption and obesity due to increased risk of sedimentation in the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Depending on the sensitivity, hormone fluctuations, summer temperatures or weather changes, like rapidely increasing or decreasing air pressure, can cause similar symptoms.
When measuring blood pressure, the pressure in a blood vessel is determined by means of a technical procedure. Thereby a distinction is made between arterial and venous pressure.
In particular, the measurement of arterial pressure plays an important role in medical practice, cause it is easy to carry out.
Further distinction is made between the direct (invasive, bloody) pressure measurement by means of a pressure sensor in a blood vessel from the indirect (noninvasive, bloodless) measurement, which is carried out with the aid of a cuff on an one extremity (wrist, finger or upper arm). Measuring the blood pressure is simple and painless – and therefore an important method of investigation in medicine, because it quickly provides information about the cardiac output and cardiovascular circulation. On one hand, this means whether organs and tissues are adequately supplied with oxygen and other nutrients, and on the other hand, shows drug effectiveness or concrete the impact of the rescribed antihypertensive agents.
According to my experience (including 10 years of pharma business) not every organism reacts equally to the products offered. There are basically four product groups, namely: diuretics, beta blockers, calcium antagonists and ACE inhibitors; often free or fixed product combinations make sense and lead to success.
Specifically, blood pressure measurement is a method of determining the pressure that blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels. This blood pressure is the pressure originating from the heart and produced in the arteries.
The pressure in the blood vessels is constantly changing, depending on the action of the heart. When measuring the blood pressure, two values are determined and measured in “mmHg” (millimeters of mercury).
The result is the higher pressure when the heart contracts (= systolic pressure) and the lower pressure when the heart relaxes (= diastolic blood pressure).
From a medical point of view, blood pressure measurement is especially important to discover encreased values (hypertension). Because high blood pressure may damage the heart, blood vessels, brain, eyes and kidneys and may also lead to heart attack or stroke. Therefore, it is advisable to recognize and treat high blood pressure as soon as possible.
CAUTION: Hypertension does not cause any pain for many years and is not felt in the beginning. Therefore, it should be measured regularly and under certain circumstances also under load, e.g. during an ECG while cycling.
A high elevated blood pressure is usually referred to – if otherwise no secondary diseases are known – from a value of 140 (diastole) to 90 (systole). Normal average is 120/ 80; in case of children, the (limiting) values are considerably lower depending on their age.
By the way, once a year – usually in May – the “World Hypertension Day” takes place.
Vice versa, low blood pressure (hypotension) has no serious health effects, but may cause dizziness, headache and fatigue. The low blood pressure limits are slightly different for men (110/ 70) and women (100/ 60).
As a hypotonic, I know about the feeling of panic that can arise when the tonus, which is usually sinking at night, falls so low (usually around 2 o’clock) that the pulse just before fainting counteracts with high frequency to somehow keep a balance.
I felt as unpleasant when I had four cups of strong black tea in company. Only 4-5 hours after this unusually high intake of caffeine and tea, the blood pressure and pulse were in balance again and the extreme restlessness disappeared. In particular, the diastolic value in this case of malaise was extremely high for a short time (over 120) – uff.
Apart from single measurements, a so called long-term measurement over 24 hours can be meaningful; then you carry the sphygmomanometer with you for a day.
Ideally, the blood pressure should be measured for accuracy on the upper arm, although these setups are on average 25% more expensive than the wrist versions. Previously, this was only possible at the doctor or pharmacist, today you can do this comfortably at home. Generally it s important that the cuff is kept at heart level throughout the procedure, this is especially important for wrist devices.
Since my wrist gage shows very different values from one minute to the other, not to say strange dates, I recently ordered the Braun ActivScan ™ 9 for comparison.
As I said, I tend to low blood pressure and I am looking forward to the experience I will make with the new upper arm blood pressure monitoring. At the moment the humid and warm weather is extremely troublesome for me; especially in the morning when getting up, my cycle/ circulation sometimes goes crazy. Recently my blood pressure was just 95/62 – a really alarming signal and not a subjective feeling.
