be it as a remedy, but also in the care and in the household.

Looks like soda (= sodium bicarbonate) is simply a perfect home remedy as a decalcifier and odor neutralizer, and is particularly environment friendly. It is available as an inexpensive powder and in tablet form in every drugstore.

Make your all-purpose cleaner, softener or descaler yourself.

For half a liter of cleaner you need:

  • 2 teaspoons of soda
  • 2 teaspoons of grated soap
  • 2-3 drops of lemon juice
  • 2 cups of lukewarm water

Heat up the curd soap in a cup of water (e.g. in the microwave) and mix it with the lemon juice and a teaspoon of soda powder. Allow the fluid to cool down a bit and decant it into a spray bottle; now it’s ready to be applied as usual.

Also in dry form sprinkled on upholstery fabrics it works as grease spot remover and color refreshment.

To make laundry nice and soft,

  • add 1-2 tablespoons of soda to the detergent and wash the laundry as usual.

If you want to generate a floral scent to the laundry, simply add a few drops of flower essence to the detergent compartment.

Soda, of course, may also be used to descale the kettle/ coffee machine:

  • Enter ½ cup of vinegar and
  • and ½ cup of soda to the water compartment.

Then fill the kettle with water, switch on and let the water boil as usual. Finally, pour the cleaning water into the drain and rinse the kettle/ machine several times with fresh tap water.

Sodium hydroxide provides a “non-acid” environment and thus inhibits the growth of bacteria on the skin, which can cause pimples and odors.

In order to use it as mouthwash fill a glass with water

  • add 1 teaspoon of soda
  • and gargle with the fluid 2-3 times a day.

For sensitive skin, a facial mask of soda helps to remove dead skin scales and coconut oil moisturizes. Simply mix

  • 1 teaspoon of soda
  • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil

to a paste and apply the mixture in a thin layer on the face. Let it act for 10-15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.

Soda can also be used as a deodorant.

  • Heat up 100 ml of water in a pot and dissolve
  • 1-2 teaspoons of soda in it.

Add a few drops of fragrance oil (such as lavender, rose or vanilla) and stir it.  Let it cool down,  fill the fluid into an old spray bottle and apply it as a deodorant spray (shake well before use).

Finally, soda also rebalances our base-acid system, because soda counteracts hyperacidity in the body. Regarding the subject  acid-base balance a bit more information will be given lateron.

Well, as a footbath soda makes the feet feel more soften and it can help against sweaty feet.

To a bowl of lukewarm water, add 3 teaspoons of soda and if you like, you can also distribute some powder inside your shoes in summer (but I have not tried it yet).

In winter times, the anti-inflammatory affect of soda helps against colds or sore throat (my mother always used to do do), against germs, viruses and bacteria. In an acute case put

  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda (prevention ½ teaspoon)
  • in a glass of water and drink 2-3 sips a day over several days.

If you feel an extensive food stomach pressure, bloating or a slight nausea, a soda drink is also suitable as a digestive aid. Dissolve

  • ½ teaspoon of soda and
  • 1 pinch of salt

in lukewarm water in a cup and drink it slowly.

Its basic attribute neutralizes the excess acid in the stomach and the stomach calms down quickly. I’ve also heard that it is a solution to help against heartburn, which thank God (so far) does not plague me.

Acidification is called acidosis (Latin acidum). Chronic latent acidosis (CLA) is a persistent, creeping form of hyperacidity in body cells and organs.

However, hyperacidity has nothing to do with heartburn and is not a disease in the true sense; rather it is a dysfunction behind a disease.

There are no typical symptoms of chronic hyperacidity. Every affected person has his typical “weak spot”. General indications of acid-base dysbalance may be

  • fatigue, concentration deficits
  • increased susceptibility to infection
  • reduced stress resistance
  • muscle and joint pain

Reasons, diagnosis, treatment:

In the first half of life the organism copes well with excess acid. In later years, when the kidney’s efficiency as the main excretory organ of acid drops, it often comes to first ailments. The metabolism produces acid as a “waste product”. In addition, acid is produced when protein-rich foods are processed. On average, only about 20 percent of our nutriments consist of base formers such as fruits, vegetables, lettuce and mineral water.

The pH-value  of the food as such doesn’t state much about their acid or base forming attributes. Acid citrus fruits, for example, are metabolized basic. Protein in dairy products, on the other hand, is metabolized sour.

Urine pH test strips are rated controversial to state the correct acid-base balance. They do not measure the acid value in the tissue, but only in the urine, which can vary greatly depending on the time of day or food intake. Only a laboratory test can reliably determine the acid-base status of the body.

At school we learned that a base neutralizes an acid. The best and most natural option for a balanced acid-base balance is therefore a base-excess diet (in other words many fruits and vegetables) and possibly the supplementation by a corresponding drug. According to my knowledge ex showmaster Birgit Schrowange advertises for one of these products since quite some time.

A base therapy certainly has no direct impact on fitness or an analgesic effect. However, as part of a holistic therapy, it can support regeneration processes.
