Yes, the upcoming (tomorrow) elections also seem like a big fairy tale …

HOWEVER, where the road becomes really narrow close to the small town of Brienz (Switzerland) and only a small sign points towards the hamlet of Giessbach, at the end of the path in the forest high above the Lake Brienz you will find an old, venerable “hotel-Institution”.

In Switzerland there is even a special hotel association for such traditional establishments, called “Historic Luxury Hotels”.

The historic Grand hotel Giessbach exists on this picturesque square since 1873. You can also reach it by boat or on the 140-year-old funicular. It is a hotel with history, but above all a place of strength, peace and relaxation. The  house brochure describes it as “building culture, nature and space for eyes and mind, enjoyment for body and soul.” Its walls would have almost perished a few years ago if they had not found a patron or lover who invested a lot of money in maintenance and renovation.

The view is breathtaking, especially when the lake glows emerald green in the sunshine.

The seventy-four rooms and suites are designed differently and bear the individual signature of the house, i.e. they are equipped with furnitures from the former centuries. No matter if the spacious suite to the double room, all rooms offer special moments where time seems to stand still. The old grandfather clock in the foyer with the large open clockwork alone is a real eye-catcher. There is of course also a grand piano for house concerts.

But that’s not all. A huge waterfall rushes just above the house; sometimes raging, sometimes splashing, but alive every day. It is illuminated at night, and during the day you can even walk behind the falls/spray. A wonderful walking-experience through nature, e.g. to train off the cream cakes and co. The house specialty, however, is the classic “carrot cake”. I have never tasted it so light and carrot-aromatic before.

There is also a natural swimming pool in the middle of a garden. It works without chemicals and promises natural bathing pleasure. In an own herb garden, hydrangeas, various vegetables and fruits as well as beehives ensure unforgettable moments of pleasure.

During the winter months the house is partly closed or only open on weekends. In terms of price, the hotel and the restaurant rage in the high-middle to upper price segment.

So what about an autumn trip? It is never too late for a day trip, especially since the Swiss authorities do not yet require a corona test for an entry of up to 24 hours from the neighboring regions of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. From Freiburg you can reach Brienz in approx. 2.5 hours (215 kilometers), from Mannheim in a about four hours (398 kilometers). Have a safe ride!
